Last night it was the Bianconeri’s chance to face Roma for the opportunity to grab a place in the last 4 of the Coppa Italia. Whilst the competition has been much maligned over the years, it still represented importance to us as we needed to keep going the unbeaten run which has lasted throughout the entirety of Antonio Conte’s reign so far.
Once again, we weren’t left disappointed, as a team which had 7 changes from the weekend’s victory over Atalanta came up trumps using the 3-5-2 system which I had been rather sceptical of in the other occasions it had been deployed. It’s safe to say that this time was the first time it was truly successful, in terms of players knowing their roles and it worked as it allowed us to absorb pressure against a Roma side who command much of the ball under their manager Luis Enrique. The game finished 3-0 to Juventus, with the goals coming from Giaccherini, Del Piero (golazo) and an own goal from Kjaer – who had a nightmare first visit to Juventus Stadium.
Del Piero was the game’s outstanding performer, really giving me an opportunity to use that horrible cliché – “he rolled back the years”. Never the less, it sums up his performance as his control and vision was sublime, often tying knots in defenders and whilst he doesn’t quite have the pace to get away from his man over the space of 10-15 yards anymore, his ball control allows him to still create space for himself as he showed for his first goal, which was an absolute netbuster, which is worth watching this comp for alone!
